The tensile strength of the skin
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the skin (70%). It also accounts for 25% of the body’s proteins and is the main component of the extracellular matrix (support structure).
Its function is to ensure the mechanical strength and firmness of the dermis. However, over time, collagen synthesis decreases while collagen degradation and collagen fiber disorganization increases, which causes tissue damage and loss of facial volume.
Collagen is the main component of the skins’ fundamental substance. Both skin thickness and tensile strength depend on the quality of collagen synthesis.
